Parent and Carer Panels

Parent and Carer Panels

We are looking for Parent and Carers of Newcastle Families to join our new Children and Families Newcastle Parent and Carer Panel.

Newcastle City Council have been awarded £3.6 million to invest in our Family Hubs and Start for Life programme. Start for Life focuses on the first 1,001 days of a child's life as a critical development period, through pregnancy to age two. Families are likely to access universal support in this period through services such as midwifery and health visiting, and some families will access more targeted support for specific issues. One place families may access this support is a Family Hub, which is somewhere that brings different services together so that residents can access the support they need locally.

Strong, supportive families make for more stable communities and happier individuals. With this increased investment, families will make sure they get the support they need from birth through to adulthood and help with children's educational attainment, wellbeing and life chances, while also improving wider outcomes such as poor mental health and unemployment.

Our Parent Carer Panel will be central to this programme of investment. They will learn more about the services we deliver and will use their experience to constructively challenge the current offer to families. Together, we will design services that improve the lives of children and families in our city. North East Action for Children Parents and Inclusion will be helping to support with the delivery of the Chilldren & Families Newcastle Parent and Carer Panel.

FAQs

What is a Parent and Carer Panel?

A parent and carer panel is a group of parents and carers who come together regularly to discuss issues that affect families across the city.

Who can join the Parent and Carer Panel?

We would like to invite parents, carers, grandparents, kinship carers and others with responsibility for a child under 2, including during pregnancy, to join our panel. If your child is over two, but you would like to join the panel, please get in touch.

Where will the panel meet?

The panel will meet regularly, at least once every two months. Meetings could be face to face or online depending on the availability of panel members. Ideally meetings would take place at one of the Family Hubs across the city.

What will panel members need to do?

The panel will meet regularly, at least once every two months. Meetings could be face to face or online depending on the availability of panel members. Panel members will be asked for their feedback on different services and their ideas for improvement. The panel will have an opportunity to learn more about the offer for children and families in Newcastle including support for parents, breastfeeding, perinatal mental health and more.

Why are you setting up a panel?

The panel will be told about our investment plans, and asked for their opinions so that together we can design services to improve the lives of children and families across the city.

What will I get for joining the panel?

Please use the questionnaire to tell us what support you need to be on the panel such as travel expenses, or childcare costs. We will ask the panel what incentives would be of interest to them, which could include training qualifications.
